Day and night tariff costs with a bill forecast

The Energy screen in HoumeOS now turns kilowatt-hours into money: a day and a night tariff, costs per period and a forecast for the bill. Together with solar priority for the battery and the car, these are the rules by which a home thinks about cost.

Consumption by itself is not a decision. People decide by money: when to switch on, when to wait, how much they will pay. That is why the Energy screen no longer stops at kilowatt-hours.

The tariff is part of the configuration

In HoumeOS you set a day and a night tariff — the price per kilowatt-hour from the grid in both zones — and the platform turns every measurement into money. The result shows on the screen: costs for the day, the week and the month, and a forecast for the bill, calculated from the real consumption curve rather than last year's average.

This changes how you read a chart. A peak at 19:00 on the day tariff is different news from the same peak at night — and the screen shows which of the two you are looking at.

Solar priority now includes the car

The distribution priority has been clear from the start: the battery first, then the boiler, then export to the grid — how that works is described in Self-consumption and protecting the battery. The EVSE socket now sits inside the same logic: solar charging is driven by a core that keeps the priority battery before car and leaves a margin to the grid, so the house is not drained to charge the vehicle.

The charger card shows how much of the charge comes from your own production and when charging waits for surplus. How that is calculated in practice — in Charging an electric car from the sun.

Water runs through the screen too

Costs are not only electricity. The Plumbing screen gathers the water system: the main valve (a critical command with confirmation), the water meter, the recirculation pump for hot water and leak protection. Irrigation reports litres per zone from the meter, not just when it ran — and it holds a cycle on rain, strong wind or wet soil. For the garden, see Automatic garden irrigation.

Small things you feel

  • Positional blinds — not just up/down but a percentage; the server's automatic shading moves them by sun and wind so the house does not overheat.
  • Weather by IP — the forecast comes from Open-Meteo with no account and no key; if you have a real weather station, it always wins.
  • Battery-powered devices — a drained sensor battery is a warning, not a surprise.

An honest note

Tariffs, costs, the forecast, solar priority for the car and the plumbing logic work today in the platform and in simulation mode. Paying real invoices, anomaly analysis and optimisation by market prices are later steps — see them in The roadmap.
