Home automation and a local smart home that live in your network

Automate the house — locally, cloud-free, on one screen.

Different faces of one idea: automating the house so that control, data and decisions stay with you.

In short

Home automation is wiring the systems in a house — lighting, blinds, climate and heating, security, gates and irrigation, energy — into shared rules, modes and history. With HoumeOS the automation is local: rules run on a server inside your network, not in a foreign cloud, so they keep working when the internet drops and need no account someone can shut down. Devices from different brands come together in one model and one screen.

What “home automation” actually means

Automating the repetitive things in a home: lights off on a schedule and when you leave, blinds shading before the rooms overheat, the air conditioner holding a set temperature, and on a leak, smoke or gas the system closing the valve and alerting — without waiting for someone to notice. The rules are written once and run even when no screen is on.

The problem: ten apps and a foreign cloud

Most “smart” devices ship with their own app and their own cloud. The result is fragmentation — a different interface for every brand, logic scattered across foreign servers, and dependencies that fall over with the internet or with a provider that changes its terms.

The solution: a local server and one model

HoumeOS ends the scatter: a server in your network holds the rules, the history and the permissions, and devices speak to a single model. You get a home run from one screen whose behaviour and data stay with you — no cloud account, no lock-in to a vendor.

  • Lighting, blinds, climate and heating, security, gates, irrigation and energy in one interface
  • Rules and history run and are stored locally — they work without internet
  • Profiles with roles and PIN, a server log and sharing access without sharing an account

Whole-house automation, in stages

You can start with one corner — say solar surplus to the boiler, or the lights on a floor — and grow. The model is identical for every device, so a new room, brand or rule never means rewriting what already works.

What it looks like in practice

The screen is a kiosk with thirteen sections — energy, climate, lighting, security, scenes, history — on a tablet, wall panel, phone or computer. Rules are assembled visually (trigger → conditions → exclusions → action) without code, and emergency scenarios run on the server even when nobody is watching.

What works today and what is coming

We do not present upcoming work as available. This list matches the roadmap.

Works today

  • Local server in the LAN: rules, modes, history and roles — no cloud account
  • Kiosk with thirteen screens: energy, climate, lighting, security and scenes on one interface
  • Visual no-code rules and roles with PIN, verified on the server (scrypt)
  • Real Matter pairing; devices enter a shared model over home/v1

Coming soon

  • MQTT broker with real devices and the first drivers (Modbus, KNX, ONVIF)
  • Phone alerts on failure (email, push, webhook channels)

Later

  • Own radio layer and a voice assistant in the platform
  • Interactive floor plan and presence-based automations

Frequently asked questions

What is home automation and how does it work?

Home automation is wiring the systems in a home — lighting, blinds, climate, security, gates, irrigation and energy — into shared rules, modes and history. With HoumeOS they are described visually (trigger → conditions → exclusions → action) and run on a local server in your network, not in a foreign cloud. So one screen replaces ten apps, and the home keeps behaving predictably, out of reach of any external provider.

Can I automate my house in stages?

Yes, and that is the sensible path. Automation can start with one corner — solar surplus to the boiler, the lights on a floor, or the guarded door — and grow room by room, device by device. The device model is identical, so a new brand or rule never requires rewriting screens you already use. The exact order is set on a site survey, based on what you have and what you want.

Does home automation work without internet?

Yes — that is the point of a local architecture. Rules, modes and history live on the server in your network, so automations keep running when the internet drops; telemetry and profiles never leave it. The link is needed only for things like external data or on-request remote access, not for day-to-day living in the home.

Do I need a cloud account for a smart home?

No. HoumeOS has no cloud account and needs none for core features — rules and data are stored locally, with no sign-up or subscription for basic control. That also lowers the risk of one-sided terms changes or an outage from outside. A device that relies on its own cloud can still enter the unified model or a driver, without a separate app for it.
